'Gotong-royong' to combat dengue

KUALA LUMPUR: The high number of dengue cases in Cheras has prompted City Hall and Rotary Club of Cheras to hold a gotong-royong at Taman Connaught, here, recently.

Rotary Club of Cheras president Len Nyok Chong said the club had always carried out activities to help others in need.

"Today, we are complementing our role with those of government-linked agencies, private sectors as well as UCSI University students to make the event a success," he said.

Also present was Rotary International district 3300 district governor Dr Raveendra Kumar.

"We have succeeded in eradicating polio and I believe there is a way to eradicate dengue as well.

"For now, we can at least do preventive work by getting rid of potential mosquito breeding grounds," he said.

City Hall advisory board member Banie Chin said the programme was conducted annually at 11 constituencies since last year.

"It is also a pleasure to see the Cheras Residents' Association members join in even though it is Fathers Day," he said.

There were about 300 participants, who were divided into four groups and assigned to Menara Gading, Jalan Arif and Jalan Cerdas.

The team cleared the clogged drains and rubbish, removed illegal advertisements and stickers, chopped off tree branches and fogged the areas.

Rotary Club of Cheras vice-president Simon Wong said: "Besides helping to combat the rising number of  dengue cases, the programme also creates awareness of crime prevention through booths here," said the 51-year-old father, who came with his family.

There were health screening and crime prevention booths set up at the UCSI building.
