KUANTAN: TWO fishermen in Kampung Chempaka here, who went out to sea  early yesterday,  landed a whopping 130kg sting- ray.
Khairul Anizam Abidin, 31, and Mohd Irwan Abdul Rahman, 28, left their homes at 7am.
"I was pulling the fishing line at 9.30am when I realised something big and heavy was trying to free itself from the hook.
"After struggling for almost one hour, Irwan and I managed to pull the stingray into our boat, which almost capsized due to its weight," said Khairul at his home.
He said he immediately travelled back to shore as he was afraid the boat would sink.
With the help of several villagers, they managed to take out the 2m-wide stingray from his boat. They then sold it for RM130.
"Since it is a pari daun (roughnose stingray), I could only sell it at RM1 per kilogramme.
"I can get a higher price if it is a pari pasir (banded whiptail stingray)," said Khairul, the eldest of 10 siblings.
He said he had been helping his father catch fish since he was 10.
When his father died in 2001, Khairul took over the role of breadwinner for the family.
"I never caught or saw such a large fish before. This is a windfall for my family and Irwan's," said Khairul, who shared the money with his fishing partner.
Asked what he used as bait to land the giant catch, he said he only used fresh ikan tamban, which had landed various types of fish, including kerapu and siakap in the past.
